Martinis at Bar Rêve

Cobble Hill · Cocktail Bar

Bar Rêve

If you're like me - you love a good cocktail and good food, but don't always feel like traveling far from home - Bar Rêve is the place to go. It's just a few minutes from my home in Brooklyn Heights, and it has quickly become one of my go-to spots.

“Exactly the kind of place you almost want to keep to yourself.”

The martinis are the specialty here, and they take them seriously. They're cold, crisp and made with the kind of care that makes a second one feel inevitable. The food is delicious too, the kind of plates made for sharing over drinks that turn a quick stop into a full evening.

But what really makes Bar Rêve is the atmosphere. It feels like a speakeasy, with low lamplight, marble tables and an old-Paris charm that makes it easy to lose track of time. It's intimate without being stuffy, and exactly the kind of place you almost want to keep to yourself.

All'Antico Vinaio

Upper East Side · Sandwich Shop

All'Antico Vinaio

Some places earn their reputation one sandwich at a time. All'Antico Vinaio started in Florence in 1989, and the line out the door there became famous. I just discovered there's one a block from my office, which is either very convenient or very dangerous, depending on the day.

“The line at lunch is just as long as the one in Florence.”

Everything is built on schiacciata, a warm Tuscan flatbread that's crisp outside and soft inside. The fillings are simple and generous: good Italian meats, cheeses and creams, stacked high. La Paradiso is the one people talk about, with mortadella, stracciatella, pistachio cream and crushed pistachios, and it lives up to it.

It isn't a sit-down dinner. It's the perfect midday escape on the Upper East Side, a little taste of Florence between meetings - and fair warning, the line at lunch is just as long as the one in Florence.
