A Pinch Of Salt

A Pinch Of Salt

Welcome to my 18th edition of a newsletter that has nothing to do with real estate, but everything to do with the foodie scene in New York City and beyond.

Moving forward, I have decided to switch it up and focus only on two restaurants a month. I will be keeping the Michelin-rated restaurant, but also adding an place that usually has nothing fancy going for it except for delicious food - to show the true culture of New York City.

This buttoned-up Williamsburg restaurant just received its Micheline Star. The glitzy brasserie is located in a converted limestone bank on Broadway down the street from Peter Luger and Diner, and it’s staffed by waiters in white blazers who carry around $120 platters of dry-aged duck on beds of purple flowers.

And duck is something you should absolutely order. It’s one of the best dishes on the menu and the best plate of duck I've had in this city. The skin is perfectly crunchy, and the meat inside is the ideal combination of salty, fatty, and juicy. Every order, which can feed between three and four people, also comes with a side of creamy mashed parsnips, rich soppressata jam, and sauteed Swiss chard topped with pine nuts for some added crunch.

Where: 206 Avenue A, New York, NY 10009 | East Village

Borrachito is a playful and elevated take on a traditional Mexico City-style taqueria with a speakeasy located in the back. The tortillas are hand-made in-house and fresh-press daily. The menu blends traditional Mexican cooking practices with experimental ingredients, providing a fresh and fun take on the classic taco.

The tacos here tend to be on the meatier side - they have one called the “Pork Bomb,” which is really just a large mound of pulled pork, salsa, and chicharron on a tortilla (how could you not love). But I prefer the short rib one, and you might see me eating a couple of those here the next time I need to feel cool and have a cocktail and a late-night taco in Alphabet City.
